Google Whisperer Knowledge Nugget: Default Channel Grouping in Google Analytics 4
If you have been following the Google Analytics 4 journey, then you know Google upgraded the organization of reports. All those changes can seem overwhelming at first. Don’t worry, the Google Whisperer has a plan to help! Along with all of the blogs and white papers, we now have the “GA 4 Knowledge Nuggets”. These are quick blogs meant to answer the question, “where did that one report go?” We’re starting off with the default channel grouping, one of the most popular reports.
The Acquisition > All Traffic > Channels report in Google Universal Analytics has been a popular way for users to look at how traffic is getting to their site. The Default Channel Grouping sorts traffic by medium to simplify the report. It assumes that if you want more detail, you know how to get it. Google Analytics 4 takes a different approach in the Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition report and shows you both the source and medium by default. This extra detail is very useful for helping guide strategies around which sources of traffic, specifically referral, are providing value to your site.
And that’s how you find the “all channels report” in Google Analytics 4. Don’t worry, if you get lost in the land of GA 4, reach out and we will help!
